It's almost the end of July. I can barely believe it. This year has flown by so far, and it shows no signs of slowing down. It's hard to comprehend that I've almost been at my new job for 5 months! I've been all over the country traveling for work - some great places (Los Angeles, Vegas, San Francisco) and some not so good (Tulsa, Omaha, Rochester). Flights have been more turbulent than ever, and anyone who knows me knows that I can't stand flying, and bumpy flights make me hate it even more! For a few weeks now, Baltimore has been hit with a horrific heatwave. It's awful! You know it's bad when you can't remember the temperature being below 95 degrees. I leave for work in the mornings, and at 8 am it's already in the high 80's!! It's no fun when you're sweating on the way to your car, first thing in the morning. My car is black, so of course when I get in, my glasses fog up from the heat. It's so bizarre to be blasting the A/C so early!! It reminds me of when I lived in Houston, and that is NOT a good thing.
I might have to go to Santa Monica in a few weeks for work, and while it will be so great to be in LA, the downside is that I'll be working with a problematic owner, and that makes it not so good. Thankfully, I've been learning more and more the art of diplomacy!!
Also, I've been thankful to have the friends I do - now more than ever. They've managed to make me show my face more, and meet them out for drinks, and for dinners. (instead of staying inside and being a recluse like I'd normally do) My friends Dan, and Robert (or RoJo) have made my summer quite fun, and I appreciate and cherish every moment I share with them. Dan is having a party this weekend, and that is something I'm very much looking forward to - although I hope I manage to last out longer this year. (last year I was drunk by 11pm - not good!)
One last thing, I watched the movie "A Single Man" last weekend, and it was one of THE best movies I've ever seen! Tom Ford (the director) is a genius! His use of color - bringing a scene from an almost sepia-colored tone to bright colors when Colin Firth encounters someone else - is so gorgeous and lush. I think I should have been alive in the 1950's, as the clothing, the hair, the glasses, cars, homes, etc were all just breathtaking! And Colin Firth was robbed - he deserved the Academy award for this role. A scene where he cries silently for his lost lover is probably one of the most moving and sad parts of a film I've ever seen.
