When is it time to move on?
Tonight I found out that 2 of my friends were offered jobs in other cities: G was offered a job in Houston, TX for a LOT more money, and C was offered a job in Paris!! (WTF?!) Of the 2 opportunities, I think that C has the MUCH better offer! Would I take a job in Europe? Hell FUCKING yeah! I am an American tried and true, but if the opportunity arose to do a job in Europe, there is NO WAY IN HELL that I would say no. It was tonight - after these 2 conversations - that I asked myself "Is it time to move on?" When do you know it's time to go? Should the status quo be enough, or is it smart to take an amazing opportunity somewhere else? This is something I definitely have to mull over. I have 2 best friends who moved to the English countryside and Switzerland respectively, and they both LOVE it there. Is this what I've been missing? Lately I've been thinking about moving to Los Angeles - but the allure of Europe is ALWAYS there. Always.

Two places I totally clicked with in Europe many years ago were Amsterdam and Venice. But I was only visiting as a tourist, and visiting and to actually live/work there are totally different. I might end up hating them and missing home terribly. I guess we just need to jump in to give it a shot, if given the oppurtunity, if only for a year or two. Time flies, anyway :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment! I completely understand what you mean. BTW, I checked out your blog: well done! I'm a fan. And, I LOVE Ian McKellen also. Thanks for reading!
ReplyDeleteOne thing I learned moving to the English countryside, is you have to let go and keep your mind more open than you ever thought it could go. Meaning, you have to let go of your pre-conceived notions of what it means to be "an American". Every country has their own idea of what we are supposed to look like and act like, so it is great to break down those stereotypes.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing that worked for me, is when you move, don't get involved in any American ex-pat groups. They tend to be filled with Americans that are not happy in their new country and want to sit around complaining to other Americans, IMO.
Are there European job opportunities open that you are considering?
Oh wow, thanks Matt for checking out my blog and for the lovely compliment!!

Thanks for your comment kaw! I have no current opportunities for employment in Europe yet, but I am definitely keeping an open mind! My friend Kim lives in the English countryside also (outside of York) with her british husband, Alan - and I have another friend (Nadia) who splits her time between her home in Switzerland where her husband is full time, and her job in London. Both friends LOVE it, and I intend to get over to England as soon as I can.
ReplyDeletekaw = Kim, of the English Countryside...
